With the terrorist attack that took place in Sydney on December 14, the antisemitic manifestations we have been witnessing around the world with growing concern have escalated to the point of taking at least 15 lives and leaving around 40 injured. This occurred during a public celebration on the beach marking the beginning of Hanukkah.
From the CJCU, we emphatically condemn this act and pray for the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Jewish community in Australia. We also want to express our solidarity and closeness with the local Jewish community, so that these attacks may not succeed in their aim of instilling fear that prevents people from celebrating their traditions or freely expressing their identity.
Sadly, our country is not unaffected by this reality. Little by little, we have witnessed acts of antisemitism that have been increasing in frequency and severity: references in public demonstrations, ridicule and public insults, graffiti, and even explicit violence by adults against teenagers. As a society, it is urgent that we put a stop to the gradual rise of expressions of hatred we are observing, before it becomes too late to prevent atrocities like this.
May the Hanukkah and Advent candles that we light together these days help bring peace and light in these times of darkness.
