Present: Jim Bernauer, Mary Boys, Alice Eckardt, Eugene Fisher, Camille Fitzpatrick Markey, Katharina von Kellenbach, Björn Krondorfer, Michael McGarry (sec’y), Esther Menn, Peter Pettit (not present for Business meeting); Elena Procario-Foley, Jean-Pierre Ruiz, Franklin Sherman, Karla Suomala; John Townsend (not present for Business Meeting).

  1. In the absence of Peter Pettit (conveniently arranging his trip to Lund, Sweden to avoid taking notes), Michael McGarry agreed to take notes;
  2. General Observation for next meeting: schedule a time for Catholic Eucharist; used to be at the 4pm mass at St. Ignatius.
  3. Minutes from Business Meeting November 14, 2010:
    1. Corrections:
      1. Scratch McGarry who was not at the CSG mtg, but was at the ICCJ meeting immediately afterwards
      2. Add “Esther Menn” as the name of the Secretary;
      3. In 5.e., drop “third”;
      4. In 5.c., there was not “third category” for membership, so drop “interim”;
      5. In 9. “CCJR” not “CCRJ”;
      6. In 9. Although the archives have been worked on, people are having trouble finding them. Camille to investigate
      7. In 9. “The Archives, which remain at BC, still need to be catalogued.” Remove “Alice Eckardt and Frank Sherman are working with the archives”;
      8. In 9. Concern that all papers, both draft and final, need to be protected with a password.
    2. Minutes, as amended, were passed
  4. Katharina noted the wonderful hospitality of BC, personalized by the competent leadership of Camille Fitzpatrick Markey. All acclaimed in unison. (Thanks to all of BC for their gracious hospitality).
  5. Elena invited the members of CSG to join the CCJR. Franklin Sherman received their special award at its last meeting in Philadelphia; Elena received some recommendations about the appearance of the CCJR website; Elena gave a little tour through the Website; address list should go on the website and this should be done by 1 June 2011. After this happens, Camille will take down the website at Boston College and just have a link to the CCJR website.
  6. Camille will be overseeing checking the Archives boxes, including sending an index of the papers to Phil for the Website.
  7. Public Programming: Katharina thought that it went well this time. Then she invited a discussion on how this should be done in the future. This is one way of expressing our close relationship with BC. Since the program was late on Friday, the issue of Shabbat arose. Perhaps it would be better to offer it on Sunday afternoon, but that presents its own problems. However, we do want Jewish participation. Space is tight at BC with so much construction.
  8. “Thank you” to Karla for arranging the public forum at BC: “Competing Discourses: Jewish-Christian Dialogue in a Multi-Faith World” with panelists Dr. Catherine Cornille, Dr. Peter Pettit, Dr. Jennifer Peace, Dr. Mary Boys, and Dr. Jean-Pierre Ruiz.
  9. Relations with BC: BC is open to sponsor one meeting/year with up to 22 members. There was very positive response to the new hotel, Hotel Indigo, and most would like to return there. The meeting was very well scheduled. Camille needs to get our travel and arrival information early; this, in turn, imposes a good discipline on the group. While we invite students to paper discussions, the individual invitations should be left to Jim Bernauer and Ruth Langer.
  10. Dates for upcoming meetings:
    1. 14-16 October 2011 at Raphaela House, Philadelphia. Many have Monday teaching responsibilities, so the decision was unanimous for Friday-Sunday configuration (rather than Saturday – Monday);
    2. 20-22 April 2012 at Boston College.
  11. Membership Committee:
    1. Votes were taken on the following:
      1. Mary Boys, ratified, until 2016;
      2. Alice Eckardt, ratified; (with John P, only one who goes back to 1969), until 2015;
      3. Eugene Fisher, ratified, until 2015;
      4. Franklin Sherman, ratified, until 2016;
      5. Michael McGarry, ratified, until 2016;
      6. John Pawlikowski, ratified. (with Alice, only one who goes back to 1969) until 2015.
    1. Someone should do an interview and/or oral history through Alice and John Pawlikowski (sec’y note: this should be on the agenda for Fall meeting);
    2. John-Pierre: how to vet new members: have them give a paper as a kind of a trial.
    3. Jean Pierre recommended that we invite the two who gave papers at this meeting, namely,
      1. Joy Galarneau, and
      2. Demetrios Tonias (an Orthodox perspective);
    4. Jean-Pierre will follow up by requesting their CVs, ask for them to write us a letter accepting the invitation, and then coordinating our voting to accept them by email;
    5. Jean-Pierre recommended to the group Dr. Henry Knight (who has moved from Oklahoma to New Hampshire); presently he teaches at Keene State College in New Hampshire; Methodist; upper 50s; come to Spring meeting, including a Yom HaShoah presentation?
    6. Should the CSG reconsider Marty Michaelson, a member of the Church of the Nazarene? (consult Peter Pettit and Jean Pierre). He is an evangelical, shares our concerns, isolated in his own denomination; how to engage his intellectual gifts – give a paper? He was part of the Oxford program.
    7. A general discussion followed, including the following topics:
      1. Should we seek scholars who come from very different perspectives: e.g., are we ready for a Christian Zionist?
      2. issue of Israel – we need to deal with this. If we can’t handle this, then who can?
  12. Program Committee. Still needs to meet (Phil, Karla and Michael will consult soon after this meeting)
    1. The group asked Michael McGarry to reflect on his eleven years at Tantur as one entre into a CSG discussion on J-C Relations and the State of Israel; he agreed to offer a presentation in the Fall;
    2. Report from Subcommittee on J-C Dialogue & Religious Pluralism?
    3. Conversation on getting oral history from John Pawlikowski and Alice Eckardt: get someone to come to Philadelphia to do this professionally or we can. Perhaps we might use part of the Fall program to stake out the beginnings of an oral history of the CSG; among us, there are many things we can offer. Elena can consult the people she knows about how to elicit the proper responses for an oral history; need to have good equipment; this requires time and planning; equipment would have to come from St. Joseph’s; someone needs to think this through; Need to consult Elena, Katharina & Phil about doing this, including getting the equipment.
  13. Reports from the Working Groups:
    1. The Creed Group
      1. Robert will put together a report from the group’s deliberations and drafts, leading perhaps to an article;
      2. Questions were raised about the purpose and audience for this project;
      3. Perhaps the whole group can address this issue;
    2. Summer Coolidge Group: Björn noted that there were 40 applicants, for a capacity of 12; half men and half women; 3 Jewish participants; 2/3 individual research time, 1/3 time to be in conversation with one another; four weeks together; working towards an article in Cross Currents, theme on “difficult dialogues.”

Meeting was adjourned for a delicious lunch in the Walsh Room.
