Friday, October 24, 2014
3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Arrival and check-in at the Mobile Marriott Hotel (except perhaps for some home hospitality guests).
5:30 p.m. Transfer from the hotel to Ahavas Chesed Synagogue for evening services and Shabbat dinner.
~ 9:00 p.m. Transfer of most members from Ahavas Chesed Synagogue to the Mobile Marriott Hotel.
Saturday, October 25, 2014   (All events today at Ahavas Chesed Synagogue)
8:00 a.m. Breakfast on own.
9:00 a.m. Transfer from hotel (or homes) to Ahavas Chesed Synagogue.
9:30 a.m. Shabbat services at Synagogue.
~ 12:30 p.m. Lunch.
2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Interreligious dialogue: CCJR members and leadership/honorary board of Mobile C-J dialogue. Three conversations about the Torah portion for the day facilitated by:

  • Mark Winer, Universtiy of St. Thomas (Miami)
  • Peter Zaas, Siena College
6:00 p.m.

Dinner.

7:00 p.m.

Havdallah followed by transfer of all members to Mobile Marriott Hotel.

Breakfast on own at Mobile Marriott Hotel.

Christian Bible Service (interreligious) with dialogue around the day's texts, prepared by:

Bus departure for short sightseeing tour of Mobile, ending with lunch on the causeway. After lunch, bus transfer to Spring Hill College.

CCJR Panel: "Pope Francis and the Future of the Dialogue" - Byrne Memorial Library

  • Rev. Dr. Dennis McManus, Georgetown University; Catholic-Jewish Relations consultant, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Public Panel: "Beyond Intolerance and Hate: Interreligious Relationships in the South"
Byrne Memorial Library

  • Scott Douglas, III is executive director of Greater Birmingham Ministries, a multi-faith, multi-racial, multi-ethnic organization serving families in economic crisis. He has written on social and racial justice inSouthern Exposure, Howard Law Journal,and the National Newspaper Publishers Association

  • Roy Hoffman, novelist and journalist, is former staff writer for the Mobile Press-Register, with a special interest in area culture, religion, and history. He was the recipient of the 2009 Clarence Cason Award in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Alabama.

  • Mark Potok, Senior Fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, is one of the country’s leading experts on the world of extremism and serves as the editor-in-chief of SPLC’s award-winning, quarterly journal, the Intelligence Report, its Hatewatch blog, and its investigative reports.
