Flowing from the Catholic and Jesuit identity of Saint Joseph's University, the Institute's mission is to increase knowledge and deepen understanding between the Jewish and Catholic communities. Founded in 1967, the Institute pursues a vision of shalom (or "right relationship") between Catholics and Jews. It is also dedicated to promoting opportunities for them to be “study partners,” teaching and learning about themselves and each other by studying and experiencing together texts, rituals, events, and places. For this reason the Institute is directed by two professors in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies. Institute personnel offer courses on Christian-Jewish relations to Saint Joseph's University students and also partner nationally and internationally in research dedicated to furthering the process of Jewish and Christian reform and reconciliation.
